Become familiar with the international protection symbols used to indicate the ingress of solid objects and liquids in electrical enclosures.
The Ingress Protection Rating (or IP Rating) is an international standard (IEC 60529) for the degree of protection or sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures against the ingress of objects, water, dust or accidental contact. This standard is equivalent to the European standard EN 60529.
IP ratings often consist of the letters IP (Ingress Protection) followed by two numbers and optional letters. The two numbers and the final letter indicate the following protection category.
The first digit after IP indicates the level of protection provided to enclosed equipment against solid foreign objects and human contact with hazardous parts such as conductive bodies.
level |
Size of the protected object |
Protection effectiveness |
X |
- |
X indicates that there is no data on the protection level specified |
O |
No protection |
Not protected from objects touching or entering |
1 |
Diameter>50mm |
Large surface area of an object Intentional contact cannot be prevented |
2 |
Diameter>12.5mm |
Finger or similar object |
3 |
Diameter>2.5mm |
Tools, thick wires, etc. |
4 |
Diameter>1mm |
Most wires, screws, etc. |
5 |
Prevent dust |
The ingress of dust is sufficient to cause damage to the equipment during operation Completely prevent contact |
6 |
dust-proof |
No dust ingress Completely prevent contact |
The second number after IP in the code rating indicates the level of protection the waterproof enclosure provides to the device.
level |
Size of the object being protected |
Protection effectiveness |
X |
- |
X indicates that there is no data on the protection level specified |
O |
No protection |
Cannot prevent water ingress |
1 |
Dripping |
Vertical dripping |
2 |
Dripping at slope < 15° |
Vertical dripping when the cabinet is tilted < 15° |
3 |
Water spray |
Water spray at angle < 60o from vertical |
4 |
Splash |
Protects the actuator from water splashing onto the housing from all directions |
5 |
Water jet |
Protect the push rod from water spray from a nozzle (6.3mm) spraying towards the box from any direction |
6 |
Powerful water spray |
Protects the actuator from strong nozzle water spray (12.5mm nozzle) spraying towards the cabinet from any direction |
7 |
Immersion depth up to 1m |
Water ingress during temporary immersion (immersion depth up to 1m) |
8 |
Immersion depth exceeds 1m |
Water ingress during continuous immersion (immersion depth exceeds 1m) |
9K* |
Powerful high temperature water spray |
Close distance high pressure and high temperature spraying *All tests marked IPx9 with letter 'K' in standard IEC 60529 are defined by ISO 20653 standard. |
Industrial actuators are often used in environments where they are subject to both liquids and solids. Therefore, all our actuators with aluminum housings are tested to achieve IP66 and IP69K ratings, making them versatile for a wide range of applications.
Actuators marked with IP66 rating are completely protected against dust ingress and strong water jets from any direction. This makes them suitable for outdoor use in changing weather conditions.
If the application requires washing with high-temperature, high-pressure water jets, IP69K is the recommended protection level. This is a common requirement, for example in agricultural machinery, where the actuators do not have to be covered or protected. After field work, the actuators are often exposed to dirt, fertilizers and frequent high-pressure washing.
